Announcing Bob Dorough’s new recording!  First issue on his own label!

Bob Dorough - The Houston Branch
DeesBees Records (DB CD – 001)

This CD features Bob’s daughter, Aralee, and her husband, Colin Gatwood,
on flute & oboe, respectively and respectably, in arrangements that have been
written for them by Bob, some of them done years ago and some for this recording project.

The recording was done in Houston and also features three of that city’s busiest sidemen:
Larry Slezak, tenor sax, David Craig, bass, and Joel Fulgham, drums.

Bob is at the piano of course and, although he only sings two of the nine tracks,
you won’t want to miss “September Song.”

Those of you in the Pocono area, who may have attended a concert at ESU (February 17th, 2005), would have heard Aralee and Colin playing this repertoire with Bob.  The Houston sidemen were represented by our own busy cats:  Nelson Hill, tenor sax, Steve Gilmore, bass, & Bill Goodwin, drums.  Eric Doney also appeared at that concert playing “classical” selections with Aralee,
which pieces however are not included in the Houston Branch CD.

Some of the arrangements you will hear on the CD were written for only the two woodwinds,
and go back to a time when Aralee & Colin were students, and wanted to play a little
“street music,” for spare change and performing experience.  Now, years later, Aralee
is the principal flutist and Colin is the second oboist in the Houston Symphony Orchestra.
They requested that their “famous” Dad make a jazz recording with them and thus this CD
was born, along with the new label.

Bob Dorough’s three CD’s done for Blue Note Records (“Right on My Way Home,” “Too Much Coffee Man,” & “Who’s on First”) are now, sadly, unavailable.  The lack of control in such matters has caused some rethinking on Bob’s part, as well as that of many other currently active recording artists.  “It was a heady feeling, to be on a major label for a minute,” Bob reports in the press,
“but one is helpless when the greater powers decide the product is no longer viable.”
This “product” will never be pulverized!
